VCR (Volumetric Capture Rig) is our volumetric capture stage — a purpose-built system for recording real performances as fully three-dimensional, moving data. Instead of scanning a static pose or building a digital double by hand, VCR captures a person, object or performance exactly as it happened, in full 3D, in real time.
It's the product of an ongoing collaboration between Prism AI and Clear Angle Studios, combining Clear Angle's 13+ years at the forefront of spatial data and motion capture with Prism AI's work in next-generation 3D rendering. Together we've built a rig designed from the ground up for one of the most exciting formats in modern production: 4D Gaussian splatting.
Think of it as a 360° array of cameras surrounding a performer or object, all firing in perfect sync. Every angle, every frame, every strand of hair and fold of fabric is captured simultaneously — no rotating turntables, no stitching separate takes together. The result is a live-action performance where you can play back and view from any angle, at any time, as if the camera itself were free to move anywhere in the room.
Because it's captured for real rather than built by hand in a computer, VCR skips the traditional CG pipeline of modelling, texturing and simulating a digital double. What used to take months of manual work in post-production becomes a direct, high-fidelity dataset — ready to use in a fraction of the time.
Lighting is set per project, not fixed by the rig. We can shoot under flat, even light to keep every option open for relighting later, or under your actual production lighting if you want the scene captured as-is. That flexibility is what makes the data useful well beyond the shoot day.
Because the output is a true volumetric dataset rather than a baked-in image, the lighting on a Gaussian splat capture can be changed after the fact — placing a performance into an entirely different lighting environment without re-shooting. This is where our VFX partner Union VFX comes in, using the capture data from VCR to relight and integrate performances into finished shots.
